Maths

Maths is the core to pretty much everything that our society enjoys in the world around us. From the obvious like shopping, cooking and computing, to the more creative aspects of life like art, architecture and sport, a solid understanding of Maths, and the ability to apply that understanding, is essential to everyday life.

The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason Mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At Chulmleigh Primary School, our daily Maths lessons follow the Maths Mastery approach, mainly using ‘White Rose’ which is ‘influenced, inspired and informed by the work of leading Maths researchers and practitioners across the world’. This approach follows the simple mantra that ‘everyone can do Maths’ and uses engaging ways to build understanding, confidence and competence in various different Mathematical concepts. Children are inspired and challenged to develop their curiosity about these concepts using Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract supports (physical resources, pictures and written working out). Connecting the Maths the children learn to real life experiences promotes this curiosity, deepening their knowledge and strengthening their skill base.

Pupils are taught, and encouraged, to make rich connections across mathematical ideas in order to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.
