PARTNERSHIP FOUNDATION STAGE UNIT
The Chulmleigh Partnership Foundation Unit was opened by Dr Phil Norrey (Director of Education for Devon) in 2004. It was the first of it's kind in Devon.
WHAT IS A PARTNERSHIP FOUNDATION STAGE UNIT?
The PFSU is run as a partnership between Chulmleigh Primary School and Little Chums Pre-School, the two local providers of Early Years education. The aim of our PFSU is to provide educational experiences of the highest quality that fully meet the statutory requirements for Early Years education, by professionally trained staff, in a well organised and attractive environment.
We meet the educational and childcare needs of children from the term of their third birthday through to the end of the year in which they are five years old, and for some children, through to the end of the year in which they are six years old. Our PFSU therefore covers the three years of the Foundation Stage
The Governors of the Primary School and the Committee of the Pre-School jointly have legal responsibility for the PFSU and the education it provides. A Joint Steering Group, comprising representatives from both the Primary School and Pre-School, oversees the running of the Unit.
THE BENEFITS OF THE PFSU FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR PARENTS
The advantages of the Primary School and the Pre-School working together to run a PFSU include:
- the improved co-operation and partnership between the previously separate local Early Years providers
- the provision of a high quality and consistent education for children throughout the whole Foundation Stage and possibly Year 1.
- a seamless setting for children’s learning and care during their early years
- a coherent, unified structure for parents and their children
- a specialist unit staffed by adults trained to teach the Foundation Stage curriculum who have time to get to know each child well
- a qualified teacher who acts as the Early Years Co-ordinator and is involved in all the children’s education throughout their time in the Unit
- the sharing of facilities and resources including a designated outdoor classroom
- the maximisation of potential sources of funding through shared fund raising and improved access to grant funding
- a seamless transition for children from the PFSU into School
WHAT WILL MY CHILD BE DOING?
All children in the PFSU follow a carefully planned educational programme mostly through structured play with more formal activities when appropriate. We work hard to ensure that all children receive an education appropriate to their individual needs.
The Preschool part of the unit is open 5 morninggs (9.15-12.00) and 2 afternoons (1.00-3.30). The children can attend a lunch club on Tues and Thurs from 12.00-1pm.
The children have access to a large, well resourced outdoor play area which can be accessed in all weather. The children are encouraged to grow vegetables and flowers to make their environment an attractive place to be in.
There is a good balance of child initiated and adult led activities within the well resourced learning environment. At the school's recent OFSTED it was noted that the PFSU was a possitive contribution to the success of the school.
If you would like to come and visit us or find out more details please contact the PFSU staff at the school.
